Frequently Asked Questions
How much does GPHUD cost?
Currently the product is completely free. Eventually a charge of 1-2 USD per region per month may be levied (payable in L$, currently 250-500 L$/regionmonth). This charge is to cover the cost of the compute resources consumed running the product which covers bandwidth, storage and compute charges for the 2 Amazon AWS instances that run the cluster. This should not be seen as a payment for my time or the product, simply the resources necessary to provide the service product which remains freely supplied. (I'm not in this for the money, and if I were I doubt Second Life provides the most meaningful return on time invested).
Do you have any documentation
Yup, this website, https://sl.coagulate.net/Docs/GPHUD/, contains documentation about components, example uses and a collection of “How To”s
How do I get the product installed
This process varies over time, once there's a charging infrastructure in place this will likely be all “self service”, however, for now:
- Decide on a “Short Name” for your installation (formally known as 'an instance')
- Decide on a “Primary Owner” for your instance - permissions can be delegated to other users but there must be a singular owner, this is a policy decision to avoid arbitrating in any later disputes between residents.
- Add the experience “Permissions Request” to your parcel ; edit your parcel details, to go the experiences tab (last tab), and “add” an “allowed experience”, search for “Permissions Request”, owner by “Iain Maltz”, and add this.
- Find a location on your sim for the Region Server (which rezzes hands out HUDs), this is usually somewhere a little out of the way but doesn't have to be.
- Contact Iain Maltz and find a time for the installation which, if all the above have been completed, will only take a minute or two.
- At the end of this process, you will be given a GPHUD Region Server of your own to rez ; rez it and wait a minute while it boots up and surveys the region (it's checking who already has HUDs, which at the moment will be no-one).
- Click the region server to get a HUD given to you once it reports it's ready. If the experience is set up properly you will either get an experience join prompt (once ever), or the HUD will auto attach if you're already in the experience.
- Click the bottom right of the 6 buttons on the left of the HUD, this will take you to the website where you can configure things.
- Refer to the documentation above to get started configuring your product
Useful resources
- Latest release notes - details all changes to the code, new features, bug fixes, etc
- Optional "open access" notices group - used to push notices when a release is made, subscribe to this group if you want to know about new releases/feature being deployed
- GitHub issue tracker - go here to report bugs, or make feature requests
- GitHub project roadmap - things I'll get around to “one of these years”
Feel free to contact Iain Maltz if you need any guidance with the user of the product ; it can be both simple and very complex and providing support in getting the most of the product is expected.
